Elevating Global Health Standards: Highlights from the SNOMED International Business Meetings in Vienna
The recent SNOMED International Business Meetings in Vienna proved to be a pivotal week for the global health terminology community. For West Coast Informatics (WCI) , it was an incredible opportunity to engage with partners, contribute to strategic planning, and showcase the next generation of mapping technology.
Here are the key takeaways from our time in Vienna.
The Debut of Mapping Tool 2.0 (MT2)
One of the most rewarding moments of the week was introducing West Coast Informatics’ (WCI) Mapping Tool 2.0 (MT2) to the Managed Service User Group. Developed in close collaboration with the Norwegian NRC, MT2 is an internationally focused solution designed to address the increasingly complex needs of the global SNOMED community.
Rick Wood, Technical Leader at WCI, reflecting on his presentation, noted:
“We were delighted to present MT2 to the SNOMED Managed Service User Group in Vienna. The reception was fantastic, and we’re excited by the insightful feedback and innovative ideas shared by the members.”
MT2 is built to support modern mapping at scale. Whether it is simple or complex maps, Snowstorm integration, bulk mapping, terminology-agnostic workflows, or translation reporting, the tool is designed for versatility and efficiency. We are energized by the thoughtful questions from the session and are ready to carry that momentum forward.
Celebrating Global Interoperability
Beyond our own presentations, the atmosphere in Vienna was one of celebration for the advancements in global standards. A major highlight was honoring the integration of SNOMED and LOINC. It was a privilege to witness the LOINC team receive a special gift marking this milestone - a significant step forward for global standards interoperability.
Looking Toward the Future: ICD11
The meetings also served as a forum for discussing the most pressing challenges in the field. A recurring theme was the integration of ICD11, particularly for countries navigating the use of both SNOMEDCT and ICD11. As we move forward, West Coast Informatics remains committed to advancing interoperability between these two vital systems, ensuring that data remains a powerful asset for healthcare providers worldwide.
What’s Next?
While the Vienna meetings have come to a close, the collaboration is just beginning. We want to thank everyone who attended our sessions and contributed to these vital discussions.
We look forward to continuing these conversations in person later this year. Join us at the SNOMEDCT Expo in Sydney, October 21–23, 2026.
